Why Doesn’t Universal Orlando Have a Timeshare?

With the success of the Disney Vacation Club, you might think that Universal would be ready to take the plunge into the vacation ownership industry. It’s not for lack of demand, either—there’s a strong case to be made that a timeshare property at Universal Studios Orlando would have plenty of eager fans. Over the years, Universal has steadily expanded its appeal, making sure there’s something for every type of traveler, from families with young wizards in tow to thrill-seekers chasing their next adrenaline rush.

Universal’s wide range of experiences—think kid-friendly favorites like Minion Mayhem to pulse-pounding coasters like the VelociCoaster—means visitors often want more than just a single day to explore it all. It’s no wonder that many families find themselves returning year after year, hoping to experience each new attraction or themed land.

Given how popular and diverse Universal’s offerings have become, it’s easy to imagine a dedicated timeshare resort attracting a loyal base of guests. With the growing demand for flexible, family-friendly accommodations near beloved attractions, a Universal-branded timeshare would definitely find its place in Orlando’s vibrant vacation scene. However, there are some major reasons why that isn’t likely to happen any time soon.

Universal Isn’t Actually in the Hotel Business

While there are many Universal-branded hotels in Orlando, they’re all actually run by Lowes Hotels, a luxury hotel brand that, as of 2025, has yet to enter the timeshare industry. For a Universal-branded timeshare to exist, one of four things would need to happen.

  • Lowes Hotels enters the timeshare industry: This is easier said than done, since they’d be competing with powerhouses like Wyndham, Hilton Grand Vacations, and Westgate in one of the world’s most competitive markets.
  • Universal and Lowes collaborate on a Universal Vacation Club: This isn’t impossible, and mitigates some of Lowes’ risk, but it’s a big gamble that would require a lot of investment.
  • Universal partners with another developer: This would mean that Universal is competing with its own product and would jeopardize its long-term relationship with Lowes.

The Existing Universal Hotels Aren’t Built for Timeshares

If Universal and Lowes decided to start a vacation club, they’d be at a noticeable disadvantage compared to the competition. The Universal hotels, such as Portofino Bay and the Helios Grand, aren’t built for timeshares. Making them timeshare-ready would involve massive renovations or entirely new developments.

The typical timeshare villa is about as spacious as a small apartment, and features separate bedrooms, full kitchens, full baths, and even in-room laundry. The average hotel room has a combined sleeping and living space, a half-bath, and maybe a kitchenette. Universal’s existing hotel rooms are nice, but they lack the features of the competition, and there is a lot of competition nearby.

Now, it’s not impossible to add timeshare villas to a traditional hotel. Disney has done so multiple times, including the Contemporary Resort. However, Disney has a major advantage over Universal in terms of space.

Land Is at a Premium at Universal

Walt Disney bought the land that would eventually become Walt Disney World through various shell companies and aliases back in the 1960s. Back then, Orlando was mostly undeveloped. As a result, Disney owns a substantial amount of land in the region: if they want to build a new resort, a theme park expansion, or even the long-rumored fifth gate, land isn’t the main obstacle; permits and logistics are.

In contrast, Universal Studios is in the middle of the Orlando Metro. There is a reason why you need to take a bus to get to Epic Universe: that was the nearest swath of mostly undeveloped land. Plus, just because land is undeveloped doesn’t mean it is cheap: people want to build attractions, resorts, luxury homes, and shopping centers, so demand is high. Additionally, much of that land is already developed. People live and work there, and many don’t want to sell.

Will We Ever See a Universal Timeshare?

It’s not impossible. Universal is at the best place it’s ever been right now. Epic Universe is a massive hit, and they’ve established themselves as true rivals to Walt Disney World. However, there are significant hurdles.

Universal would need to partner closely with Loews to develop and manage any timeshare offerings. Coordinating between two large companies can make the process more involved—think extra negotiations, shared decision-making, and splitting responsibilities for everything from marketing to guest experiences.

This could work out in the end: Lowes runs 26 hotels across the United States, so a Universal Vacation Club powered by Lowes could offer a far wider variety of destinations than Disney. It would just be a massive undertaking. Now, as Epic Universe proves, Universal is no stranger to massive undertakings, but with the new park still in its infancy, it doesn’t seem like a Universal vacation club is in the cards any time soon.
